The Westcountry Storytelling Festival
Aug 27th-29th 2010
All Weekends £170 (limited concessions available).
All weekends involve the telling and study of two major myths, and focused time alone in the natural world. For those interested in storytelling itself, there will be performative opportunities as well as several sessions on the art of telling itself.
The aim is to study the role of the mythic imagination and its specific relationship to the land and our psyche. Culturally rich, it makes associative leaps between Spanish Poetry, Gaelic folktale and the incantations of Inuit Shamanism to name but three. It is an eclectic programme and deeply soulful. It follows the word ‘wild’ through story, poetry, ceremony and landscape
The aim is to study the role of the mythic imagination and its specific relationship to the land and our psyche
Most weekends are held in cosy residential centres on the moors-hot water, bed, wood burning stove, great company, wild story. Specific details on each weekend sent on enquiry.
Although it is possible to join the course at any point, there is an understood commitment to attending the remaining weekends.
To view Martin's international schedule please go to appearances at:
The Wheel of Story - an intimate series of workshops focused on a seasonal exploration of ancient folktale and its implication in the challenges we face today. Each day is at Bonehill House, in the heart of Dartmoor, and costs £60. Click here for more details.
Saturday 10th April
THE VOYAGING HEART AND COURTED SOUL
As we are in Spring, Martin will be offering myths of love and beginnings, spirited poetry from Lorca, Rumi and the Troubadours, practical exercises in nature, and how we explore the seasonal pulses of our own lives. Scroll down for more dates…
Saturday 3rd July
WE MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING
As we move into high summer, we will draw upon stories of challenge, relationship, and the pursuit of vocation in the summer of our lives - what are we questing for? Poetry will come from Nikki Giovanni and Sharon Olds. We continue to make a beloved companion of the outside world, following certain bardic tasks.
Autumn and Winter dates and course details are as follows:
Saturday 2nd October
THE TAWNY EYED CRONE AND THE SHAGGY BONED PIPER
As we turn to autumn, Martin offers T. S. Elliot's, ‘Old Men (and women!) should be explorers’. Stories of cunning, ingenuity and wildness are the order of the day. We also acknowledge the depth and stillness of autumn in the work of W. B. Yeats and Mary Oliver.
Saturday 4th December
THE HEART OF A TORTOISE, THE COAT OF A ROOSTER
In our final day together we enter the world of winter and meet four Gods and Goddesses of ageing to ensure we stay connected to our lusty, troublesome and curious selves. Stories of humour, grief and peace, with poetry from Antonio Machado and Fran Quinn.
